What is the Bologna Process?

The Bologna Process is a higher education reform process that is currently adopted by 49 European countries. Its main purpose is to facilitate student and staff mobility and to enhance the quality and recognition of higher education system and make it more inclusive and accessible.

All participating countries agreed to:

  • introduce a three-cycle degree structure (bachelor's, master's and doctorate)
  • adopt the European Credits Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) to make it easier to recognize the qualifications and learning periods abroad
  • adopt the Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area (ESG) to strengthen the quality and relevance of learning and teaching

Why is the Bologna Process important?

Bologna process is key to building the necessary trust for successful learning mobility, cross-border academic cooperation and the mutual recognition of study periods and qualifications earned abroad. Enhancing the quality and relevance of learning and teaching is also a core mission of the Bologna Process.
