A Lebanese Organization Contributes in Spreading the Culture of Peace to UoD’s Students
The Forum for Development, Culture & Dialogue (FDCD) in Lebanon has recently ended its project in cooperation with the University of Duhok (UoD). This cooperation was conducted through the Academic Consortium of Cooperation and Conflict Resolution at the UoD. Two NGOs from Duhok, namely Badinan Org. for Free Press and Darya Org. for Developing Woman & Community, were also involved in the project.
The aim of the project was to spread the culture of dialogue and peaceful coexistence among students. Therefore, a workshop entitled “Spread the Culture of Peace among Students” was held from the 10-13th October 2011. Four sessions took place at different locations, namely: the Schools of Administration & Economics, Law & Politics, Arts and Basic Education.
According to Dr. Joutyar M. Rashid, the Director of the project, “This workshop also attempts to open doors for mutual cooperation between the university and civil society organizations. Through projects like this, students will be able to experience the work of non governmental organizations”.
Program Coordinator for FDCD in Lebanon, Mr. Maher Btaiche, said that “This workshop took place as a result of a mutual project between FDCD and the UoD in cooperation with two NGO's in Duhok." Continuing, Mr Btaiche went on to say," The purpose of the program is to benefit the students as well as some participants of NGOs and to develop their abilities on ways of spreading the culture of peace and good citizenship”. Mr. Btaiche showed his appreciation for the work that the university as achieved. Also the cooperation between the UoD and local organizations was considered motivation for more similar work to help develop the abilities of the teachers and students as well as the NGOs’ staff on issues of peace building and conflict resolution.
