Dr. Jan Claudius Völke, from the Arnold Bergstraesser Institute (ABI) at the University of Freiburg in Germany, paid a visit to the UoD on November 30th, 2009. During his two months stay at the university, Dr.Volke gave a course on European Studies for the UoD instructors and students and he also made a detailed report for the DAAD about the UoD. Dr. Völke was very optimistic about the future of UoD students, praising their intelligence and their desire for studying.
“The UoD through this step of opening a department for European Studies, aims at expanding the moves towards opening an independent college for this kind of studies”, said Dr. Völke. He also mention that the German DAAD organization had previously trained some UoD instructors and he hoped that DAAD would support the opening of this new college.
Dr. Völke will submit this report about the UoD regarding its readiness and capability to open the intended college to the DAAD. According to Dr. Völke, this information would serve the UoD in starting this project, though DAAD by itself cannot make the final decision. He said, “ it was normal for the project to take some time until experts make the closing report about the plan, however, the UoD was ready to carry out the venture and to make sure that all the requirements are fulfilled including the license, a specialist staff and a place.’’
Finally, Dr. Völke said “I have been through a new experience here in Kurdistan and that was something new for me. It is very hard to meet people as kind as I have found during my stay in Duhok". The German instructor expressed his happiness for teaching at the UoD showing appreciation to the students, university instructors and employees.
