The college offers a four-year course of study (two semesters a year) leading to the B.L. degree.
The College of Law and Politics was established on May 22, 1999. It began as a department in the College of Administration and Economics in 1997. The college has developed several programs to help students. Law students host judges at the governorate courts to preside over seminars and student summer programs in order to gain practical experience at the court houses. The college also introduces its students to tour the regional prison system to promote relations between the university and its respective society in order to put in motion an active college role in assessing and resolving legal dilemmas from outside of the system. Completing the four year study increases the graduates’ ability to work as a lawyer or Legal Professional in governmental offices or private sector companies. The legal practice course is also available to those who wish to become solicitors.
The college of Law and Politics demands a high academic standard since it equips students with the analytical skills necessary to enable them to comprehensively recognize the principles of law, human rights, and democracy. The objective is to give students the legal expertise that enables them to work in law courts, legal advisory offices, or as legal consultants to companies or organizations. In addition, the college has developed a number of services to help its students complete their studies successfully.
Since the opening of the college, it may be engaged in development, maintenance, services, and information technology. The educational environment is tailored to meet the needs of students and provides them with a variety of professional skills. The college employs modern teaching methods and has research and computing facilities to train students to look ahead and meet the needs of the future.
The college admits high school students whose grades iare high and recommended by the central admission office. The study in the college is four years and upon completiing the requirements the students will be granted a Bachelor in law L.L.B.
The graduating requirements are completing four year and passing all the courses with at least C grades and completing two months internship , writing a graduate paper and passing the area test of the content of that paper.
The college aims to provide students with analytical skills that will enable them to learn the principles of law in a comprehensive manner, human rights and democracy. Also giving them the legal expertise that will enable them to work in the courts of justice, legal and consulting offices, or legal advisers in companies or organizations or work in the legal profession.
The students have gained experience and knowledge in the various areas of specialization . They receive practical skills through training in regional establishmnets in addition, they have experience of writing their reserachs projects. They obtain theoretical and practical experience in all branches of law over four school years.
The college can be distinguished from the other colleges by its variety of specializations which might be considered the base for any development of the country. The college is also open to other speciallizations and participates in strategic planning. A typical court was established in (2008) for the training of students on the practical side of the law.
The College has good connection swith the actual practical life ,as it fulfills the aim of any desired design of the people and governmental requests. Once the students have graduated, it is expected that they will be able to offer the scientific services based on the academic and practical knowledge they have gained during their four years of study. The college is expected to offer services to the society through the students who graduate from its departments.
There is good relations between the college and other colleges, private sector and governmental directorates by offering continuous educating courses There is a cooperation exchange between the college and other colleges by supervision on high education researches and study courses besides dealing withexternal examiners to acess higher educated student thesis.
The college has relationships with many different parties through scientific fields. Concerning cultural relationships, there are relationships with cultural centers such as the Cultural and Social center which is related to the University of Duhok and also there are relationships with civil society.
