To this end, the founding of the College of Arts in 1994 was essential to successfully accomplish this undertaking. The need for efficient English interpreters and translators in government and private agencies prompted the development of the department of English Language in 1996. The department of English is also responsible for teaching English throughout the University of Duhok and running extensive English language courses for the teaching and administrative staff of the university and other governmental agencies. To fill the gaps in the teaching staff of Duhok's ministry of Education, the department of Geography was opened in 2005.
